At Thandi it is very important to work with an ethical mindset. We appreciate everyone involved in the process of the products; from our fabric suppliers to our dedicated team of designer, tailor and seamstress. Janneke believes in growing together as a Thandi family and in paying fair wages so creations can be made with love which is apparent by the quality of the garments.
Founder & Designer
Janneke was born in 1976 in a small town in Holland. In 1998 she came to South Africa for social work practicals and during this year she met and fell in love with her husband Vincent. She returned to Holland to finish her degree and flew straight back to live in Cape Town in June of 2000. Having no license to practice social work, she bought an old Elna sewing machine for a few hundred rand and started playing around with making blankets and baby clothes. Slowly but surely her passion for designing and sewing took over her need to find a position as a social worker and now she has the opportunity to combine the two through her fashion label Thandi . One of her goals for the future is to facilitate skill training and job creation projects. As a mother of three wonderful daughters she hopes that Thandi will become a family business to be proud of and that her girls will get involved one way or another.
Veronica is a very talented seamstress from Mitchell’s plain. After being unemployed for 5 years she joined the Thandi team around April 2016 initially on a temporary basis. She has proven herself to be indispensable and most loyal, hardworking, talented and honest. Her experience has been working in factories on different parts of garments but at Thandi she is creating things she did not even know she could do; complete garments in different styles, sizes and fabrics. Even when she was a stay at home mom of three beautiful daughters she never gave up faith and started selling egyption cotton bedding from home which she makes in her own time and she still sells today at our Thandi boutique. We are happy to say she will soon receive her permanent contract!
